yet another reason to make that vasectomy appointment

Newsweek this week writes about the new trend of hipster clubs opening their doors for kids and parents:
Adult venues like World Café Live in Philadelphia, 12 Galaxies in San Francisco or Schubas in Chicago are opening their doors on weekend afternoons to welcome children under 8. Baby Loves Disco, now in 18 cities across America, offers diaper-changing stations, bubble machines and healthy treats for kids. (Parents can make use of a fully stocked bar, the chance to dance again and, in some locations, even pampering like massages and eyebrow shaping.) Capitalizing on Gen-X parents’ appetite for all things hip, bands like the Terrible Twos, the Sippy Cups and the Dirty Sock Funtime Band are doing shows that make Mom and Dad feel less like June and Ward Cleaver and more like Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.

I don’t see why this is a bad idea. It’s not like this is happening at a time when other shows would be happening anyway, and frankly, I’m tired of the idea that children have to be confined to Chuck E Cheese or the park. I hate stupid dancing characters and terrible kiddie music, but it’s hard to find kid-friendly places that don’t have that sort of crap (plus serve junky nonvegan food, and give you the hairy eyeball if you bring your own).
I love going to shows, and started going by myself when I was 15 and want to raise my kid with an appreciation for live music too. If there was something like this in my area, I’d take Noodle.

What concerns me the most is the line “parents can make use of the fully stocked bar”. IMO if you have children there are certain sacrafices that you make. One of them being not drinking socially with your kids around. Here in GB it is not that uncommon to see kids in bars with their parents. There is a restaurant/bar here called THE BAR. It has a kids menu. That’s fucked up.
I am not saying that parents can’t have fun any more. But don’t take your kids out and then expect to be able to have a couple of drinks. Its just not acceptable.

I’m not a big drinker by any means, but if both parents are there I see nothing wrong with one parent having a beer or 2 while they’re out. Both parents drinking when you have to drive to get home = not ok.

There is nothing more annoying than other people’s kidsx except perhaps if those ‘other people’ are drunk.
