blue steel

Wed, Apr 18th, 2007

I’ve been running around the house the past few days perfecting my best Zoolander “blue steel” face.

You may ownder: is this just my normal zaniness? Am I experiencing facial tics? Do I have a nerve disorder?

No dear reader, I have no problems. In fact, the reason I’m perfecting my blue steel face is because I’m going to be in a photo shoot.

–> cue I’m too sexy for this blog <--

Seriously, though, I'm going in to be photographed for Inked Inc, a photography project by fellow Cornell grad Dave Kimmelberg that shows tattooed professionals in both their professional garb (presumably, with tattoos hidden) and then in their everyday wear, with tattoos sticking out for the world to see. If you pop on over to the site, you can get a sense of the kind of work Dave does on this project.

I’ve never done a photo shoot before, but the hardest part about this one is trying to figure out what constitutes my “professional” clothing, and how it differs from my everyday wear. Here’s my typical uniform:

* black boots or chucks (veg-un, of course)
* jeans
* black t-shirt with some kind of witty message or graphic

That’s what I wear to class, to meetings, to work, around the house — just about everywhere. I often say (half-jokingly) that I got a PhD so that I never had to wear a tie. But with that said, I do actually own button-down shirts, sport coats, and even nice pants that I wear on occasion, say, when I’m invited to dinner at the President’s house, or when I have some kind of banquet to attend. So, that’ll constitute my professional gear. My non-professional everyday gear will, of course, be as above, though I think I’ll top it off with a Vegan Freak t-shirt.

I’ll let you know how it goes!

I suggest wearing your usual cothes for the professional gear and then going naked for the every day :) I would buy a copy for that!

Sarah’s Photo tip of the day:
The camera will pick up fear, so look into the lens like you’re looking at someone you love. Pretend you’re looking at Ms.Jenna. :)

I was just thinking, we dress almost exactly the same. Black T-shirt, jeans, and my Vegan Macbeths (which kinda look like Cons but IMO cooler 8) ). It’s like we’re twins, or something.

@SBB: check with him, he may need someone else.

@Mark: yay academia indeed! Now, let’s hope they give me tenure in the fall. btw, nice shot of you on your blog!

@Matt: Thanks — and I also have a pair of vegan macbeths (I wear those to work a lot, since they’re not as beaten up as my Chucks). :)

@Sarah: thanks for the very kind tip. I wasn’t fearful until you mentioned it. Now I am. (just kidding, but I’ll make veritable love to that camera if it helps)

@Dana: me naked is not a pretty sight, but I appreciate the thought anyway ;)

I did and he is interested… not to be a big copycat or anything! :) I’m excited to have someone take a really good pic of it.

That’s a cool site with a cool premise.
You’re lucky that you can dress so casually, I have to wear a suit every day. It gets tiresome.
Good luck with your photo shoot - will you be posting/linking the pics?

That’s so cool. I stumbled onto his site a few weeks ago and love it.

I thought I commented on this, but alas I didn’t. This site rocks and it is pretty cool that they are doing a feature on you. My place of employment has a pretty strict dress code (I had to take out my nose ring about 2 years ago) and they generally frown upon tatoos. I am planning to start a sleeve pretty soon, so I am glad to know there are other people out there who “hide it” at work.

    Any hoo, congrats!
