What if the Kindle Succeeds?

After reading a lot of the FUD from the Free Software Foundation about Amazon’s Kindle e-book reader, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s recent article on the Kindle strikes me as a reasonable set of questions and issues to consider. Our book Vegan Freak is available on the Amazon Kindle, (read about my experiences porting our book to the Kindle here) and will continue to be available in its 2nd edition, forthcoming this winter. Having purchased a Kindle for use in our business, I’ve been impressed with the device, and I believe that it could revolutionize the publishing industry in time. The question is, will the rights of consumers be thrown under the bus?

“Most of the students I encountered had already embraced the perspectives of the rich, the powerful and the unalienated, and they seemed to have done so with appalling ease.”

All the Priviliged Must Have Prizes, an article detailing one lecturer’s experience with teaching at Harvard. The author goes on to discuss the overt sense of entitlement, the tacit acceptance of the virtues of free market capitalism, and the expectation of professors to be nothing more than providers of a business service.

“Strange Overtones” from the new David Byrne and Brian Eno collaboration, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, available for download on their Web site. So far, I’m liking it.

“If you put this in the class of wedding receptions gone bad, I guess this would take the cake.” Apparently, this bride and groom had an “electrifying” time at their reception.

Site changes

As the 3 of you who read my blog may have noticed, I’ve been making some changes around here. Mostly, I moved to a new back end for the blogging called Chyrp. I’m still moving things around and updating the look of the site, so you may see some rough edges here and there as I complete the work of moving to the new engine (for example, I still have to style the comments, fix up bits of the sidebar, add in pages for the about section, and more).

Thanks for your patience.
