Buffy?
Fri, Dec 29th, 2006
I’ve had a variety of friends over the years that have tried to convince me to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer but I just can’t see the appeal. According to my friends, it is the sort of show that I’m supposed to like and it supposedly has some kind of post-hipster-cool po-mo vibe to it, all of which seems less rather than more appealing.
It isn’t that I’m above bad TV. In fact, I rather like bad TV, particularly sci-fi. I dunno. Anyone have any thoughts on this one?

I just noticed that in the comment guidelines it tells us “no profanity” What?! lol.
So a bit late, but I wanted to comment anyway. I am a tv-hater, as most people who know me are well aware, but I have watched a lot of Buffy even so. I started watching it when a friend basically begged me to. It meant a lot to her, and in the name of friendship I agreed to give it a try. I hated the first one - the sci-fi effects were so awful, I couldn’t pay attention to anything else. But I had agreed to watch three episodes, and by the third, I didn’t notice the awful special effects. And I ended up watching basically all of the many episodes of the many seasons. (but not on tv!)
I have heard that buffy is studied in some women’s studies classes. I’m not sure if it is true, but I could see it as valid. Basically every “monster” and situation a girl growing up in this society has to face, is also faced by Buffy. In buffyland, they’re real monsters, and they’re real end of the world situations. It is somehow really cool to see Buffy literally kicking the ass of the boyfriend who turns into a literal monster after the first time she has sex with him. There are so many issues brought up, and I can’t remember them all by now. But I thought it was clever the way these issues were brought to light and faced down by the cast of Buffy.
I have no idea what post-hipster-cool po-mo vibe is, so I have no idea whether Buffy has it, or even why that should mean someone would or wouldn’t like it. All I can say is that I didn’t see the appeal of Buffy either, until I’d watched a few episodes. I’d recommend watching 3 to see if you’re going to like it. Three seems to be a magic number. And even if you still don’t like it, really you should check out the musical episode - hiliarious!

Well, I haven’t given the show a whole heck of a lot of analytical thought, but I’ve been a pretty big Buffy fan ever since I first saw it a couple year ago.
I agree with debmango’s suggestion of watching 3 episodes and giving it a shot. But many of the big jokes in the show tend to refer to past episodes, some that happened 5 years before, depending on what season you’re watching. So just keep that in mind.
For the utmost hilarity, make one of the three episodes you watch “Once More With Feeling” from season 5.
You would probably get a kick out of “Doublemeat Palace” in season 5, also.
“Hush” in season 4 was actually nomiated for an Emmy, and it’s pretty cool also.
‘Kay, I’m rambling. I’m gunna quit that now. Peace!
